When might orthodontic treatment be necessary?
In the case of dental treatments, the fear and anxiety related to pain and the procedure are especially understandable.
Some patients are only frightened by more extensive procedures, while others are intimidated by the very thought of dental treatment.
At the PrimaDenta Dentistry clinic in Szeged, you don’t have to worry even if you fall into the latter group.
The fear of pain can be so strong, often stemming from personal or others' bad experiences, that numbing the treated area may not be enough.
To prevent high levels of anxiety, our clinic offers the option to perform procedures under sedation, reducing our patients' fears and increasing the likelihood of a positive experience with the treatment.
The essence of the method is that sedatives are used to relax and calm the patient:
- the feeling of tension
- the feeling of fear
- we reduce the sensation of pain
- and induce a state similar to light, superficial sleep.
During this procedure, you will be able to communicate and cooperate. with your treating doctors, you will feel that the procedure is pleasant and brief, and afterward, you will hardly remember anything.

Characteristics of conscious sedation:
- During the treatment, sedatives are administered intravenously into the patient's bloodstream, which helps eliminate feelings of tension and fear, inducing a light, anxiety-free state.
- It is crucial to have an empty stomach at least 6 hours before the procedure. You may drink water up to 2 hours before the procedure.
- The respiratory, swallowing, and circulatory defense reflexes remain intact.
- During sedation, the patient understands the doctor's instructions and can easily open or close their mouth according to the needs of the treatment.
- There are no side effects.
- After the treatment is completed, consciousness clears very quickly.
- The patient perceives the entire treatment duration as much shorter than it actually is.
- The risk is minimal.

- The sedation process step by step:
Step 1:
After the anesthesiology assessment, we will first place the blood pressure and pulse monitoring devices on you.
Step 2:
Next, we will establish an intravenous line using a cannula in the back of your hand or in the crook of your elbow, through which we administer various sedative and pain-relieving medications. If necessary, we will also provide oxygen through a thin nasal cannula.
Step 3:
Once the aforementioned medications prove to be effective, we will begin the dental treatment. During the procedure, we will continuously monitor your vital signs until your consciousness fully clears.
Step 4:
After the procedure, you will remain in the clinic for about 1-2 hours. Once the observation period has passed and your condition allows, you will be discharged to go home with an adult companion.
The intravenous cannula will be removed before discharge.
After intravenous sedation, driving is prohibited for 24 hours, and it is not recommended to make important legal or other decisions.
